Family of Jerry Garcia Announce Plans For New Bay Area Archive, Live Venue

The family of Grateful Dead co-founder Jerry Garcia have announced plans to open a new center in his honor somewhere in the San Francisco Bay Area. It will reportedly include a music archive and a venue for live performances. No timeline for completion was provided. As the Chronicle reports, this news comes courtesy of a joint statement issued Friday by Garcia s family, archival company Starchive, and project coordinator Christopher McCutcheon. In it, they propose the creation of the Jerry Garcia Music Arts Center, which would itself include a public research library and physical archive, as well as exhibition galleries, a digital preservation hub, and a performance center. The statement does not mention a specific location beyond intentions to house the center within the San Francisco Bay Area.Regardless, if successfully completed, the Center would offer a compelling opportunity for locals and tourists alike to engage with Garcia s lasting significance as a major counterculture figure
